Farm supplies help people keep going

Sudan, Blue Nile and South Kordofan. As the war in Sudan drags on, people are managing to survive – but under extremely difficult circumstances.
The war has devastated the food supply across the country. Sudan is among four countries with the highest prevalence of acute malnutrition, and severe food insecurity continues to escalate.
Rural areas in Blue Nile and South Kordofan States are no exception. Conflict and insecurity have left people unable to farm as much as usual, and food imports are expensive. People are going hungry, and struggling.
One local farmer in Gambarda – Mohammed – said he was starting to think about selling his land just to provide for himself and his children. He didn’t have the money to buy seeds and other farming supplies.
With funding from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, Sudanese organization LM International is providing critical agricultural support to help Mohammed and others like him in Blue Nile and South Kordofan.
The project provided seeds and tools, as well as trainings on improved farming methods to help people make the most of available resources. Some 1700 households were able to access seeds and tools ahead of the rainy season – allowing them to make the most of planting time.
Now they are harvesting their crops of sorghum, millet, tomatoes, okra and more.
Mohammed said, “The seeds sprouted quickly and benefited from the final rains of the season. My sorghum is growing tall and the quantity of millet, watermelon and okra should cover our needs for almost a year. With the money I will earn from selling a bit of surplus produce I can start reinvesting in my farm.”
