Sudan, El Fasher.  The situation in Sudan remains dire.

The city of El Fasher in Darfur has suffered heavy fighting in recent months, including bombardment targeting hospitals and markets that has killed and injured civilians.

Famine conditions have recently been confirmed in Zamzam camp, and thousands more people are likely suffering similar conditions.

United Peace Organization, a Sudanese NGO, is on the front lines, providing shelter assistance in Zamzam camp with funding from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund. Distributions of household items – like tarpaulins, jerry-cans, and cooking utensils, have reached over 7,000 people.

“Families who had to live under the trees now have shelter to protect them,” explains Mohamed Adam, a programme officer with UPO. “And they are using the jerry-cans we gave them to fetch water.”

Working in El Fasher is dangerous, as deadly fighting continues to wreak havoc on civilians and humanitarian workers alike.

“I leave home before the battles begin,” Adam explains. To get to work and distribute assistance, he and colleagues must pass through some of the most dangerous parts of the city to distribute aid.

“But it’s great to see your work making a difference for people,” he adds.

Hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people remain at risk of famine, as Sudan’s public health system is devastated by the conflict.

Since the beginning of the war in May 2023, the Central Emergency Response Fund and the Sudan Humanitarian Fund have allocated $281.2 million ($101.3 million from CERF, and $179.9 million from the SHF)to bring life-saving aid to 4.7 million and 4.6 million people, respectively, across the country.

In August, a new allocation of US$41 million was announced from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, to help people in famine hotspots, active conflict areas; and newly displaced people.
